Fishing in Mammoth Lakes

Mammoth Lakes is renowned as one of the top fishing destinations in the western United States, with abundant opportunities for trout fishing in alpine lakes, rivers, streams, and creeks. Anglers target species including rainbow, brown, brook, and golden trout (catching one of each is known locally as a “Sierra Slam”).

Popular spots include the Mammoth Lakes Basin (road-accessible lakes like Lake Mary and Convict Lake), Hot Creek (a famous fly-fishing area), and nearby June Lake Loop. Fishing is possible from shore, boat, dock, or by wading, with both stocked and wild fisheries. The general fishing season in Mono County typically runs from the last Saturday in April to November 15, though some catch-and-release waters stay open year-round. Always check current California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations, limits, and permits.

The area’s high-elevation, cold, clear waters provide a challenging yet rewarding experience, often with beautiful mountain backdrops.

Hiking in Mammoth Lakes

The Mammoth Lakes area boasts over 300 miles of trails managed jointly by the Town of Mammoth Lakes and Inyo National Forest, ranging from easy lakeside strolls to strenuous high-country treks.

Highlights include:

  • Mammoth Lakes Basin trails — Short hikes connecting lakes like Horseshoe, Mamie, and Twin Lakes, with wildflower meadows and views of the Sierra.
  • Convict Lake Loop — An easy, scenic 2.5-mile trail around a stunning glacial lake with colorful mountain backdrops.
  • Crystal Lake Trail — A moderate hike through pine and fir forests to a beautiful alpine lake with panoramic basin views.
  • Deer Lakes Loop and Duck Pass Trail — More challenging routes offering access to hidden lakes, high meadows, and wilderness areas.

Many trailheads are accessible right from the Lakes Basin (via shuttle in peak season), and longer adventures connect to the John Muir Wilderness or Devils Postpile. Popular for day hikes, backpacking, and photography, the trails showcase granite crags, forests, and alpine scenery. Permits may be required for overnight trips in wilderness areas.
