Dennis Casebier

Dennis Gene Casebier (September 23, 1934 – February 10, 2021) was a renowned historian, explorer, author, preservationist, and advocate for the Mojave Desert. Often described as a “scientist turned historian,” he dedicated much of his life to researching, documenting, and preserving the history and cultural resources of the eastern Mojave Desert in California. His work transformed obscure historical routes and sites into recognized treasures, inspiring thousands of adventurers, off-road enthusiasts, and conservationists.

Early Life and Career

Born in Topeka, Kansas, to Marvin and Mary (Kieffer) Casebier, Dennis grew up in the Midwest. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1953 and was stationed at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California, during the Korean War era. This assignment sparked his lifelong fascination with the Mojave Desert’s landscapes, history, and lore. He vowed to return one day.

After his military service, Casebier earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and physics from a Kansas university. He pursued a career as a physicist with the U.S. Navy, working for the Naval Sea Systems Command in Norco, California (about 200 miles from the Mojave). His professional life involved global travel, but he maintained a deep personal passion for desert history. Starting in 1954, he began collecting archival materials—old photographs, maps, documents, and oral histories from “old-timers”—building what became one of the most comprehensive private collections on the eastern Mojave.

Rediscovery and Mapping of the Mojave Road

Casebier is best known for his pioneering work on the Mojave Road (also called the Old Mojave Road), a historic 150-mile wagon trail crossing the eastern Mojave Desert from the Colorado River near Fort Mojave (now Needles area) westward through rugged terrain to Camp Cady and beyond. Used by Native Americans for centuries, it became a key military supply route in the mid-19th century after the U.S. Army established forts in 1859 to protect travelers and mail during conflicts with indigenous groups. By the late 19th century, railroads and newer roads largely bypassed it, allowing much of the route to fade into obscurity and become overgrown.

In the late 1960s and 1970s, while still working for the Navy, Casebier rediscovered and meticulously surveyed the entire route. He traveled it on foot, by vehicle, and through extensive archival research, uncovering forgotten segments that had reverted to native vegetation. By 1970, he had traversed the full length from the Colorado River to Camp Cady and began publishing his findings.

His seminal 1975 book, The Mojave Road (part of his “Tales of the Mojave Road” series), detailed its history, including military use, forts, and exploration. He followed with additional volumes in the seven-book series, such as Reopening the Mojave Road: A Personal Narrative (1983) and Mojave Road Guide: An Adventure through Time (1999), plus works on related topics. These books combined historical narrative, personal accounts, and practical guidance, making the route accessible to modern explorers.

In 1981, Casebier co-founded the volunteer organization Friends of the Mojave Road to organize maintenance, protection, and promotion of the trail. Through volunteer efforts, clearing, signage, and advocacy, the road was reopened and preserved. His work helped integrate it into the Mojave National Preserve (established in 1994), where it remains a popular four-wheel-drive route managed by the National Park Service. Recreational use keeps vegetation in check and prevents erosion, while his guides ensure safe, respectful travel.

Role in the Restoration of Goffs

In 1990, upon retiring from his Navy career, Casebier and his wife, Jo Ann, purchased a 113-acre property in Goffs, California—a near-ghost town along old U.S. Route 66, near the intersection with historic railroads and just south of what would become the Mojave National Preserve—for $100,000. The centerpiece was the deteriorating 1914 one-room Goffs Schoolhouse, a Mission-style building that had served the community until the 1950s.

Casebier saw potential in transforming the site into a hub for desert history. In 1993, he founded the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association (MDHCA) to ensure the long-term preservation of his research collection and the property. Through donations (including from Friends of the Mojave Road), the group raised $150,000 to fully restore the schoolhouse by 1998, returning it to its original configuration. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The restored schoolhouse became the Goffs Historic Cultural Center, housing Casebier’s vast archive (the Dennis G. Casebier Library), exhibits on Mojave history, Route 66, railroads, mining, and Native American heritage. It serves as a visitor center, research facility, and event space (including annual Mojave Road Rendezvous gatherings). Casebier lived on the ranch until later years, moving to Bullhead City, Arizona, where he passed away at age 86 with his daughter Darelyn by his side.

Legacy

Dennis Casebier authored over a dozen books under his Tales of the Mojave Road Publishing Company, amassed an unparalleled collection of desert artifacts and documents, and inspired a generation to appreciate and protect the Mojave. He received numerous honors for his contributions to history and conservation. As one contemporary noted, he “single-handedly rediscovered the Mojave Road and got thousands of others involved.” Today, the Goffs Cultural Center and the Mojave Road stand as testaments to his vision, ensuring the eastern Mojave’s stories endure for future explorers and scholars.

Kelso Depot

The story of the westward expansion is the story of the railroads.  Beginning in 1862, the Union Pacific Railroad sought expansion opportunities along the western coast of the United States.  To secure a foothold into California the railroads must cross the Mojave Desert and the depot in Kelso was crucial to accomplish this goal.  Located at the junction of Kelbaker Road and the Kelso Cima Road, the Kelso Depot stands in testimony of the technological progress of the nations trains.

August of 1900, Montana Senator William A. Clark invested in a small Los Angeles based railway which would become the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad.  In 1902, in mine owner made a deal to sell half of the stock to the Union Pacific even before the railway was completed.

In 1905, after 235 miles of track are laid, three warehouse men placed their names in a hat and drew out the winner John Kelso, for whom track siding #16 of the Salt Lake route was named.    Later in 1905, Kelso was just one depot along the Salt Lake Route which now stretched from San Pedro, CA to Salt Lake City Utah.  This new route opened southern California to the Union Pacific Railroad.  In 1921, Union Pacific convinced Senator Clark to sell his remaining shares.

Additionally, in 1905 Senator Clark divested himself of some land in southern Nevada along another rail stop.  This auction is considered the birth of Las Vegas, and Clark Country was named for the man.

Built in 1921, The Kelso Depot is architecturally styled as a Mission Revival and just one of several depots along the route which were designated as division points and provided facilities for operations and maintenance purposes.   The buildings original design included a telegraph office, conductor’s room, baggage room, staff dormitories, a billiard room, library and locker. The spring water in the nearby Providence mountains allowed the location to service the steam engines.  Additionally, the relatively steep 2% 2000 foot grade necessitated the use of helper engines by the steam locomotives of the day to crest the Kessler Summit.

Union Pacific continued to operate the depot from 1921 to 1985.  The depot provided much need infrastructure during World War 2, at which point the facility started a long decline in utility.  Diesel engines improved efficiency and duration allowed the Union Pacific railroad to reduce their personnel requirements.  The 1960’s introduced the second generation of more powerful and efficient diesel engines which eliminated the need for the helper engines.  Combined with the cessation of passenger travel in August, 1964 the Kelso depot is destined to languish on the back roads of history.  The Kelso Depot ceased operations as a train depot in 1962.

The Kelso Depot is currently in use as a Visitors Center of the Mojave National Preserve.

Southern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus helleri)

Crotalus helleri is a venomous pit viper species commonly known as the Southern Pacific rattlesnake. It is part of the family Viperidae, which includes venomous snakes known for their long, hinged fangs that allow them to deliver venom deep into their prey.

Description

Crotalus helleri typically ranges from 60 to 120 centimeters (2 to 4 feet) in length, although some individuals can grow larger. The snake exhibits a variety of color patterns depending on its geographical location. Common colors include brown, olive, gray, and occasionally greenish tones. The body is marked with dark, diamond-shaped blotches running along the length of its back, often bordered by lighter scales. These blotches may be less defined in older individuals. The snake’s head is triangular with a distinct neck, and it has a characteristic rattle at the end of its tail, which it uses as a warning signal.

Distribution and Habitat

Crotalus helleri is primarily found in Southern California, extending into Baja California, Mexico. Its range includes a variety of habitats such as coastal sage scrub, chaparral, grasslands, woodlands, and deserts. The snake is adaptable and can be found at elevations from sea level to over 2,000 meters (6,600 feet).

Behavior

This species is generally diurnal in the cooler months and becomes more nocturnal during the warmer summer months to avoid the heat. Crotalus helleri is a sit-and-wait predator, typically ambushing its prey, which includes small mammals, birds, lizards, and amphibians. The snake’s heat-sensing pit organs, located between the eyes and nostrils, allow it to detect warm-blooded prey even in total darkness.

Reproduction

Crotalus helleri is ovoviviparous, meaning that the females give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Mating occurs in the spring, and after a gestation period of about 5 to 6 months, the female gives birth to a litter of 4 to 12 young, usually in late summer or early fall. The newborn snakes are independent from birth and are capable of hunting and defending themselves immediately.

Venom

The venom of Crotalus helleri is highly toxic and is composed of a mixture of hemotoxins, neurotoxins, and myotoxins. This potent combination can cause significant tissue damage, disrupt blood clotting, and lead to paralysis. Envenomation in humans requires immediate medical attention, as the venom can be life-threatening if untreated. Antivenom is effective, but the severity of the bite varies depending on the amount of venom injected.

Conservation Status

As of now, Crotalus helleri is not listed as endangered or threatened. However, like many species, it faces threats from habitat destruction, human encroachment, and intentional killing due to its venomous nature. Conservation efforts focus on habitat preservation and public education to reduce unnecessary killings.

Virgil Walter Earp ( July 18, 1843 – October 19, 1905) was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky, was a prominent lawman and frontier figure known for his role in the American Old West. As the eldest of the Earp siblings, Virgil took on a leadership role within the family, guiding his younger brothers Wyatt, Morgan, and James. A seasoned law enforcement officer, Virgil served as a deputy U.S. marshal and, later, as the town marshal of Tombstone, Arizona. His most notable moment came during the infamous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral on October 26, 1881, where he, alongside Wyatt and Doc Holliday, confronted a group of outlaws known as the Cowboys. Despite surviving the gunfight, Virgil’s tenure in Tombstone was marred by violence and personal loss, including the assassination attempt that severely injured him and ultimately led to the death of his brother Morgan. Virgil’s resilience and sense of justice left a lasting imprint on the lore of the Old West.

Early Life and Family

Virgil Walter Earp was born on July 18, 1843, in Hartford, Kentucky. He was the second of Nicholas and Virginia Ann Cooksey Earp’s five sons. The Earp family moved frequently during Virgil’s childhood, eventually settling in Pella, Iowa. Growing up in a large and adventurous family, Virgil, along with his brothers James, Wyatt, Morgan, and Warren, developed a strong sense of camaraderie and loyalty that would shape their future endeavors.

Civil War Service

In 1861, at the age of 18, Virgil enlisted in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He served with the 83rd Illinois Infantry Regiment and later transferred to the 17th Illinois Cavalry. His service was marked by bravery and resilience, traits that would later define his career as a lawman. After the war, Virgil returned to civilian life, married his first wife, Ellen, and started a family. Unfortunately, Ellen died shortly after the birth of their daughter.

Life as a Lawman

Virgil’s career as a lawman began in the 1870s. He held various positions across different towns, working as a constable in Prescott, Arizona, and as a deputy U.S. marshal. His reputation for enforcing the law with determination and fairness quickly spread. In 1879, Virgil moved to Tombstone, Arizona, where he would play a crucial role in one of the most famous events in Western history.

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral

Virgil Earp’s most notable moment came on October 26, 1881, in Tombstone. As the city marshal of Tombstone, Virgil, along with his brothers Wyatt and Morgan, and their friend Doc Holliday, faced off against the Clanton and McLaury brothers in what became known as the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The confrontation, which lasted only about 30 seconds, resulted in the deaths of three outlaws and left Virgil seriously wounded. Despite his injuries, Virgil’s leadership and bravery during the gunfight cemented his place in the annals of the American West.

Later Years and Legacy

Following the gunfight, Virgil is held for a preliminary trail for his role in the gunfight which led to the death of three men. On November 19th, 1881, Virgil Earp, still seriously injured from the gunfight, testified from his bedside at the Cosmopolitan Hotel. He is exonerated on November 30, 1881 with the finding on Judge Wells Spicer.

Virgil’s troubles were far from over. In December 1881, he was ambushed and shot by unknown assailants, leaving him with a permanently crippled left arm. Despite this setback, Virgil continued to serve as a lawman, moving to California, where he worked as a law enforcement officer in various capacities, including city marshal of Colton and constable in Vanderbilt.

Virgil Earp passed away on October 19, 1905, in Goldfield, Nevada, at the age of 62. He was buried in the Riverview Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. His life, marked by courage, resilience, and a commitment to justice, left a lasting legacy in the history of the American West. Virgil Earp’s story, along with those of his brothers, continues to captivate the imaginations of those fascinated by the era of the Old West.

Barnwell and Searchlight Railroad

The Barnwell and Searchlight Railroad was a twenty three miles long railroad which connected Searchlight, Nevada to Barnwell California and the larger rail network of the Mojave Desert. Between 1907 and 1910, the gold mines of Searchlight produced $7 million dollars in gold and boasted a population of 1,500. Ore is shipped to Barnwell via the Barnwell and Searchlight rail service. In order to reduce costs, the Quartette company constructed a twenty-stamp mill on the Colorado River. The new mill utilized a 15 mile narrow gauge rail is constructed down to the mill in an attempt to further reduce costs. 

Following the discovery of gold in Searchlight in 1897 a gold rush brought industry into the high desert of the Mojave. In 1900, the Quartette Mining Company formed and within a short years a population of 5000 people works the area.

The Barnwell and Searchlight Railroad is formed in April 1906 at the height of the gold rush in Searchlight, Nevada. The twenty three miles of track are laid down between May 1st, 1906 and March 31st, 1907.  On April 7, 1907, just seven days after construction is completed the railway was leased by the California, Arizona and Santa Fe Railway

By 1919 trains travelled over the B. and S. Railroad only twice a week.  A severe washout on September 23, 1923, halted traffic completely.  Train service was never restored when the track is abandoned February 18, 1924. By this point, the population of Searchlight plummeted to just fifty people. Like many railroads, the valuable track was removed and recycled in other lines across the county.

Today, the rail route is a popular route for Mojave explorers and mountain bikers. The townsite is Juan is located along the route at the base of the Castle Mountains.
